FAQs

What is Open Month?

Open Month is a nationwide “come and try” celebration of singing. Sweet Adelines choruses around New Zealand are welcoming new singers to attend a rehearsal, meet the members, and experience what it’s like to sing together — with no pressure and no commitment. During Open Month you can:

  • Attend a rehearsal for free

  • Sing along at your own comfort level

  • Be welcomed into a friendly, supportive group

  • Visit a chorus close to where you live

What happens at an open night?

We know walking into something new can feel a bit daunting — so here’s what to expect.

  1. You’ll be welcomed by members when you arrive

  2. You’ll join in some vocal warm-ups (or observe if you prefer)

  3. The chorus might perform a song or two for you

  4. You’ll sing a few songs together

  5. You’ll meet the chorus and have time to ask questions

  6. You’ll head home feeling uplifted (and probably smiling)

What kind of music do you sing?

Our choruses sing a variety of songs in 4 part a cappella (unaccompanied) style.

Do I need to be able to read music?

You don’t need to be able to read music to sing in a chorus. Our choruses provide a variety of learning tools that include audio learning tracks as well as written sheet music.

Do I need experience?

You don’t need experience, and you don’t need to sound perfect. Many of our members had never sung in a group before joining. Just bring yourself.

Is there a chorus near me?

We have choruses from Auckland to Invercargill. Find your local chorus here.

What does it cost?

There's no cost to attend an Open Night. If you decide to continue later, the chorus can explain membership options.

Some choruses may offer an Introduction Course for interested singers this month which may have a small registration cost.

What if I’m nervous?
That’s completely normal — and very common, we get it! You’ll be warmly welcomed, and you can participate as much or as little as you like on the night.

Can I bring a friend?
Yes, absolutely — it's great fun to sing with friends! And if you're coming alone, you'll soon be singing with new friends!
